STATEMENT
As visions of the invisible, my original artwork and writings relieve habitual perceptions, by inviting creativity and contemplation into contemporary spaces.
The creative process often involves an archeological approach, firmly rooted in personal experiences of place and time, where preliminary images are excavated many times over in order for discoveries to emerge. Sometimes a score of action or palette is devised, other times a sticky phrase or memory may prompt a work. Compositions acquire a supranatural quality as found objects, spontaneous emotion, improvisation, and brut experimentation add expression.
The results are layered, textural artworks, glimpsing peripheral realities that challenge our own. Through myth and revelation, free from mark making, and figuration, my studio practice offers inescapably human creations that transcend cultural memory.
BIO
Exertion Gold Sun is an artist from Shantigar, a tiny kingdom, established on the belief that art can transform life: by giving voice to the silenced, making the invisible visible, and provoking wonder.
Mentors include the American figurative master, Lennart Anderson, Native American painter and street artist, Yatika Starr Fields, and playwright and calligrapher, Jean-Claude van Itallie.
After fifteen years in New York City, followed by time in Los Angeles and Santa Fe, Exertion now lives and works in the Laurentians of Quebec.
